Frequently Asked Questions

We, the undersigned residents of Leeudoringstad, Maquassi Hills Local Municipality, calls for urgent intervention from the municipality and relevant authorities regarding the ongoing failure to repair non-functional streetlights which has left the town in near-total darkness.

Our concerns include but are not limited to:

  1. Non-functional streetlights:

Fewer than 10% of streetlights in Leeudoringstad are operational, leaving entire neighbourhoods without lighting at night.

  1. Lack of response from the municipality:

Despite four formal written enquiries submitted to the Municipal Manager since December 2025, no response has been received.

  1. Safety and crime risks:

The lack of lighting has created a climate of fear and exposed residents to heightened levels of crime, including burglaries and vandalism.

  1. Impact on infrastructure and community:

Electrical cables and substations are increasingly being targeted and damaged. Residents have also reported animal poisoning and invasions of private property.

  1. Failed installations and lack of capacity:

Streetlights installed during the Thuntsa Lerole programme are not functioning. Explanations provided, including cable faults and lack of equipment, highlight a lack of planning, capacity, and urgency.

We therefore demand the following immediate actions:

  • Urgent clarity on why the streetlights remains non-operational
  • Clear indication of who is responsible for repairs and maintenance
  • A timeline for restoring lighting across Leeudoringstad

We, the undersigned, call on the municipality to act with urgency to restore lighting and ensure residents can feel safe in their own community.
